  • PGCE Mathematics (University of Exeter)
  • BSc (Hons) Mathematics (University of East Anglia)

Experience

Throughout my career I have worked in Primary, Secondary, State, Independent, International and Special schools. I began my teaching career in 2004 and soon also began providing 1-to-1 tuition. Due to this range of work, I have prepared pupils for KS2 and KS3 SATs, GCSE and iGCSE exams, and have also worked with adult learners.

Every Summer I mark Cambridge International GCSE Mathematics, and CIE Checkpoint Primary Mathematics exam papers. This gives me excellent knowledge of mark schemes and the requirements to achieve good grades. I also have experience of exam boards EdExcel, AQA and OCR.

Young people I have worked with in Special schools include those with behavioural difficulties; medical problems including autistic spectrum and mental health; refugees with little previous learning or English; transgender and Looked After Children. Much of this work was 1-to-1. Many of the young people I worked with had missed several months or years of school, therefore effective assessment was needed to help fill their gaps in knowledge.

Working in an International school, pupils came from all over the world with English as a Second Language. Some of these pupils arrived at the school with no English, therefore adjustments were always made to lessons to ensure their progression.

More

My work experience has given me a solid understanding of progression in Mathematics, common misconceptions and what is needed to achieve great results in exams.

By building positive relationships and targeting individual needs, the pupils that I work with gain confidence and motivation. Their experiences of Maths in school and the real world often means they have negative feelings towards the subject. My enthusiasm for the subject is clear, and I adapt lessons to each individual's need to ensure their improvement and enjoyment. I always plan a lesson, but plans can be changed if a student needs help with their class or homework.

Testimonial from a parent:
'Jane has tutored or taught my son in math over the course of the last four years. She got to know my son quickly and created a safe and comfortable learning space for him to grow his math skills. My son loved working with Jane and the confidence he has gained in himself, as well as the skills he has developed are truly impressive. Jane is an excellent resource and I would absolutely recommend her to any student in need of additional support in their learning.'
